Evander's Music Box · FM-1 LARP Firmware · v1.5.2
Mother Melody gave the First Song no words, only a rhythm and a key. Whoever holds this Box holds a sliver of that Song. In a quiet hour it is a workshop where songs are made. When steel is drawn it is a herald that knows the mood of the field before the bard does. These pages teach both.
Every control on the FM-1 has a purposeful role in the bard's hands.
| Control | Function |
|---|---|
| MASTER | Analog potentiometer · Master loudness (adds up to +9.5 dB makeup gain) |
| SELECT | Endless encoder · Track selection, step length, crossfade beats |
| PRESETS | Endless encoder · Instruments (Crafting) / Quantize window (Encounter) |
| ALGORITHM | Endless encoder · Tempo adjustment (40 to 240 BPM) |
| OCT- / OCT+ | Octave shift (±3 octaves) / Full Host reset |
Four endless encoders (K1 to K4) and twelve primary function keys:
FX SEL ENV LFO EDIT GLO HOME SAVE ARP SEQ PLAY REC
In Bardic Crafting they open pages. In Encounter they alter intensity, tempo, reverb hall, and music level.
OP1 OP2 OP3 OP4 OP5 OP6 PIT GLO MONO POLY and unlabelled TOP. Ghost drum hits in Crafting; the 11 variations of the chosen scene in Encounter. At power-on the screen paints the white-and-blue curved monogram of Mother Melody with flowing musical waves. As the 6-note physical harp chime resounds, the Blue Rose blooms, proclaiming:
EVANDER'S MUSIC BOX — MOTHER MELODY HEARS THY SONG
A light wave sweeps across the keys. Tapping any button after 0.5 s skips the animation. The Box wakes exactly where you left it: the same mode, track and Scale Lock, with every song and loop (it keeps itself every 30 seconds).
| Chord | What it does |
|---|---|
| HOME + PLAY | Switches between Bardic Crafting and Encounter mode seamlessly without stopping or dropping a beat. |
| Mode | Glass Display | HOME LED Indicator | Purpose |

The Scale Lock holds every note of the Box in one scale: the keys, the sequencer, the Encounter scenes, freestyle and MIDI notes. With it on, a wrong note cannot be played. Hold GLO and the glass shows the keyboard with what each key sets; while GLO is held, keys do not play.
| Hold GLO + | Sets |
|---|---|
| a key from F3 to E4 (the left twelve, white and black) | the root: the key's own note |
| F4 · G4 · A4 · B4 | MAJOR · MINOR · DORIAN · PHRYGIAN |
| C5 · D5 · E5 | LYDIAN · MIXOLYDIAN · HARMONIC MINOR |
| F5 · G5 | PENTATONIC MAJOR · PENTATONIC MINOR |
| F#4 · G#4 (black) | DIMINISHED (whole-half) · PHRYGIAN DOMINANT |
| F#5 (black) | lock off |
| ENV (button) | lock off: back to the normal scale of the song or scene |
Turn any of K1–K4, on any page, in either mode, and a card in the knob's own colour names exactly what it changes and shows the value (TRACK 2 LEVEL, REVERB DECAY, FILTER CUTOFF, INTENSITY…). It leaves a second after the knob stops.
Some bards travel further than others.
Press HOME + FX + GLO together and the glass says MODERN MODE UNLOCKED. PRESETS now steps through a modern bank as well:
| Instrument | Engine | TONE / CHARACTER |
|---|---|---|
| TONEWHEEL | drawbar organ through a Leslie | (drawbars) |
| SAW LEAD, SQUARE LEAD, SUPERSAW, SYNTH PAD, ACID BASS | subtractive: oscillators, resonant lowpass, filter envelope | filter cutoff / filter envelope |
| FM E-PIANO, FM BELL, FM BASS | two-operator FM | FM depth / character |
| ELECTRO KIT (drum track) | kick, snare, clap, closed and open hat, low and high tom, cowbell |
Press the chord again (BACK TO THE OLD WAYS) to hide them; tracks playing a modern sound return to the harp (drums to the tavern kit). The choice survives power-off.
You never need to save the workbench. Every 30 seconds, if anything changed, the Box keeps every step, loop, instrument and setting (Scale Lock and Modern Mode included), plus the mode, track, octaves, last scene, tempo and music volume. At power-on it wakes exactly there; the footer says KEPT: AUTOSAVED after each save.
Clearing a flash sector silences the FM-1 for a few hundredths of a second, so the Box clears sectors only while stopped and untouched, and saves into blank ones while you play. Only after two minutes of unsaved changes without ever stopping will it take that short gap mid-song.
| Gesture | Effect |
|---|---|
| Hold SAVE 1 s | Keep everything now |
| Hold SAVE + white key | Bind the workbench to that Encounter scene (1–16) |
| Chord | Function |
|---|---|
| Hold HOME + REC (0.4 s) | Purge: Clears all notes on the current track instantly with zero click or memory reallocation. |
| HOME + SAVE | Undo: Restores the purged loop immediately if triggered by mistake. |
When the Box is strapped to the forearm in armor or robes, Evander does not compose. He calls. Each white key is a mood of the field; once one sounds, the sharps bend it. The Box waits for the bar line, then turns the music as a minstrel troupe would.
Each white key is a scene, counted 1 to 16 from the left. Keys 1, 5, 9 and 13 (the first of each mood) are half-lit so you can count in the dark.
| Key | Scene | Mood | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | TAVERN | REST | harp, hurdy-gurdy, bodhrán, recorder |
| 2 | CAMPFIRE | REST | lute, slow bodhrán, low cello drone, pan flute |
| 3 | SANCTUARY | REST | choir, portative organ, harp |
| 4 | LAMENT | REST | koto, cello, a lone pan flute |
| 5 | WILDERNESS | EXPLORE | distant flute calls over a bagpipe drone |
| 6 | FEY FOREST | EXPLORE | psaltery cascades, choir, recorder |
| 7 | DUNGEON | EXPLORE | war drum and anvil, cello, organetto |
| 8 | SEA ROAD | EXPLORE | a rolling 6/8 feel, shawm and gurdy |
| 9 | SKIRMISH | COMBAT | driving war drums, tense low cello ostinato |
| 10 | BATTLE | COMBAT | galloping drums, buzzing gurdy, brass |
| 11 | AMBUSH | COMBAT | clacks and silence, plucked koto |
| 12 | SIEGE | COMBAT | timpani, choir, cathedral organ, brass |
| 13 | BOSS | CLIMAX | full cathedral organ, galloping percussion, brass stabs |
| 14 | LAST STAND | CLIMAX | war drums, gurdy, shawm, the organ behind |
| 15 | VICTORY | CLIMAX | fanfare, positive organ, harp |
| 16 | REQUIEM | CLIMAX | gong, choir, cathedral organ |
Once a scene is chosen (playing or queued), all eleven sharps become its variations; before that they stay dark and do nothing. A variation lands on the next beat, and one pressed while a scene is queued waits for that scene. Choosing a new scene clears them all. A variation's sharp stays lit while it holds.
| Sharp | Variation | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| OP1 | DARK | the scene darkens into Phrygian |
| OP2 | TENSE | harmonic minor: the villain's theme |
| OP3 | BRIGHT | major: the tide turns |
| OP4 | KEY UP | up a whole tone (up to three times) |
| OP5 | KEY DOWN | down a whole tone |
| OP6 | HALF TIME | the drums run half as fast (again: back) |
| PIT | DOUBLE TIME | the drums run twice as fast (again: back) |
| GLO | BREAKDOWN | only drums and drone remain (again: back) |
| MONO | HOME | undo every variation: the scene as written |
| POLY | FULL HOST | everything back in, at full intensity |
| TOP | STINGER | a gong, a war drum and a brass chord, on the beat |
A change of mood keeps each note's place in the scale: the same tune, a new colour. Under a Scale Lock the moods and key changes leave the pitch alone; the rest still work.
| Gesture | Effect |
|---|---|
| Tap SEQ | FREESTYLE on: every key plays a note, live, over the scene; tap again to return to the scenes |
| Hold SEQ (over ½ s) | Freestyle only while held |
| Control | Effect in Encounter |
|---|---|
| K1 / OCT± | Intensity: Drone only → + Drums → + Strings → Full Host (in freestyle OCT moves your octave) |
| K2 / ALGORITHM | Tempo: 70% to 140% |
| K3 | The Hall: how much Sanctuary |
| K4 | Music Volume: under the MASTER knob |
| SELECT | Crossfade Length: 0 to 8 beats (0 = hard cut) |
| PRESETS | Quantize: Beat, Bar, 2 Bars or 4 Bars (in freestyle: your instrument) |
| ARP | Duck: the music drops so speech can be heard; again, it rises |
| FX | Cathedral Swell: the hall grows huge; again, back |
| SEQ | Freestyle (above) |
| PLAY | Fade out over a bar; again, play the last scene |
| HOME + REC (0.4 s) | Silence: everything stops at once, with no click |
| Hold GLO + a key | Scale Lock (Chapter III) |

Plug the FM-1 into a computer with a data cable. It appears as a USB audio input and a USB MIDI port, class compliant: no driver on Windows, macOS or Linux. In a DAW or Audacity, choose it as the recording input and you record exactly what the Box plays (16-bit stereo, 44.1 or 48 kHz). MASTER and the OUTPUT ceiling apply to the recording too. The port is named Felucca, after the hardware layer the Box is built on.
| Trouble | Remedy |
|---|---|
| Too quiet outdoors | Turn MASTER past halfway: it engages up to +9.5 dB makeup gain through the peak limiter. Set OUTPUT to LOUD (GLO → GLO → K4). |
| Crackles at maximum volume | Set OUTPUT to NORM (-3 dBFS) or SAFE (-6 dBFS) for sensitive external portable speakers. |
| Silence after a drop or bump | Turn MASTER up. Press PLAY. Press OCT- + OCT+ to restore Full Host. |
| Corrupted loop in battle | Hold HOME + REC for 0.4 s to purge. Tap HOME + SAVE to undo if needed. |
| Notes you did not expect | A Scale Lock may be on (GLO half-lit): GLO + ENV frees the keys. |
| A sharp does nothing in Encounter | Choose a scene first (a white key): the sharps are its variations. |
| An instrument you did not expect | Modern Mode may be on: HOME + FX + GLO turns it off. |
| The computer does not see the audio | Use a data cable; in the DAW pick the FM-1 (Felucca) as the input; try 44.1 kHz. |
| Pink diagnostic line at boot | Appears only when USB-connected to diagnose past crashes: LOW VOLTAGE (recharge battery), WATCHDOG or CRASHED (report with current activity), or STOPPED AT STEP n. (Hidden on battery power). |
| Return to stock firmware | Open The Installer and use Restore V15 with official M-VAVE stock firmware. |
| Deep recovery mode | Hold OCT- + OCT+ for 5 seconds on power-on to invoke the JieLi hardware bootloader (UBOOT). |
A bard's last trick: when every string is cut, hum. Mother Melody hears that too.
